About

Award-Winning Scientist

Bestselling Author of The Story of More and Lab Girl

Hope Jahren is an award-winning scientist and best-selling author who helps us see that science is personal.  She shares her insights from her study of climate change and plants with humor and emotion, helping us see our interconnectedness and interdependence with the world around us.  Her best selling books The Story of More and Lab Girl are favorites of curious readers, and audiences consistently give her speeches rave reviews, such as this ovation from Howard Hughes Medical Institue: "Hope’s entire visit was a HOME RUN for us. She is a wonderfully engaging personality and it was truly a pleasure to have her on our campus. She set a high bar for future presenters."

Jahren has been pursuing independent research in paleobiology since 1996, when she completed her PhD at University of California Berkeley and began teaching and researching first at the Georgia Institute of Technology and then at Johns Hopkins University. She is the recipient of three Fulbright Awards and is one of four scientists, and the only woman, to have been awarded both of the Young Investigator Medals given within the Earth Sciences. She was a tenured professor at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu from 2008 to 2016, where she built the Isotope Geobiology Laboratories, with support from National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health. She currently holds the J. Tuzo Wilson professorship at the University of Oslo, Norway.

The presentation was flawless. Hope engaged the audience with stories that highlighted the life of plants in a way that also provided insight into some of the joys and challenges of a research scientist. She was masterful in explaining the value of data, libraries, and librarians in her work. If we issued grades, Hope's would be an A+.
